25-6-2013

imageWe learned how to do scale drawings in maths. We learned how to use scale factors. When you enlarge by a scale factor of 2 you double each dimension.

Tuesday 25-6

Today is the first day of the Masterton exchange so we have been without 5 of our regular class members and gained a new student for 2 days.

We also worked on our game-shows today. Most of us managed to finish our scripts and have been working on props. This is going to help tell us more about our inquiry topic of waste-water. This is how we are going to show our learning and also to teach other people about our learning.






Monday 24-6-13





Today at school the Wood and Plastics group learned about scroll saws and that holding your fingers on the sides of the blade doesn't cut them,we also learnt about the different files: the half circular one the circular one and the triangular one. At media studies we learnt about different camera angles: Tilts, wide shots, close ups, pocket shots, medium shots, extreme close ups and a long shot.




In reading we read a story about the precious liquid and the sky stones and we focused on questioning and were using question cards to prompt us for developing questions. This is useful because it helps us find out more about the story.

Last Week...

...we had a fire alarm go off the class was great about getting up onto the courts but...

some of the class were busy inside practicing for a play at the time. They really loved having to go up onto the courts in their clothes for the play. I couldn't help but laugh at the situation.

Class Trip

The Trip


Yesterday the class and I all went to the Wastewater treatment plant out in Clive.
It was awesome to see the class so engaged in what was going on.
The children got to have a bit of a look around at some of the different parts of the wastewater station and they took a tonne of photos.
The pipes that pump the wastewater out to sea were extremely large.

These were an example of the pipes that pumped the waste water out to sea after it had been treated.





Microscope

Bob, our guide around the facility showed us and example of the bacteria and other tiny creatures that they use to treat the waste. I think the children were most impressed with the bristle worms.




 The Waste


There were Plastic pipes at several places. This showed the Wastewater after it had been treated through various different means.
It actually ended up looking quite clean by the end of it as you can see on the left hand side of the second photo


 The end

After the wastewater had passed through the large tanks that dripped the water through bacteria and worm encrusted plastic flower-shaped objects, it was ready to go out to sea. According to custom it passes through the rock river so that the water can be returned to the earth before being pumped out to the outfall 2.75km out to sea (The fish love it).


Now as a class we have a lot of follow up work to start on. So we had better get to it!!

Back to School!!

Term 2 has begun!


Over the break, Mr Billings created a sewer in the computer room our of cardboard, paint and old rolls of used up paper. Dried Hot Glue seeps out of the pipes.

...and the class looks like a sewer. 


We've started looking in depth into what it is that makes up our Waste Water. Children have shown their own knowledge on the topic and soon the class will be investigating what it takes to keep our ocean's and rivers clean of our waste.

We will also be having a quick look at how attitudes and practices have changed over time and the needs for this change.
